Tinubu’s Presidency Faces Scrutiny Amid Repeated Blunders and Ethical Questions

President Bola Tinubu’s administration continues to attract scrutiny over a series of high-profile blunders, raising concerns about competence, oversight, and ethical governance. The ambassadorial appointments saga has become a key flashpoint. Early in his term, ambassadors were abruptly dismissed, signaling a decisive foreign policy. Yet, for over two years, no new nominations were made, leaving Nigerian embassies rudderless. Only after international attention highlighted the gaps did the presidency forward a list of nominees, which shockingly included the late Senator Adamu Talba, underscoring either gross negligence or disregard for procedure.

Even after Senate confirmation, postings triggered controversy. Of the 68 approved ambassadors, only four were initially posted, including one name not on the original approved list. Public outrage forced a hasty reversal, illustrating a presidency that reacts to criticism rather than proactively managing governance.

Beyond diplomacy, other actions have fueled criticism. The administration granted controversial pardons to serious offenders, approved divisive figures for key roles, and altered provisions in tax laws without proper authorization. Reports that presidential aides allegedly demand bribes for access to the president have further raised questions about whether Tinubu fully controls his administration or is influenced by self-interested gatekeepers.

Analysts argue that these incidents suggest a pattern of carelessness, clumsiness, and moral decay at the highest levels. Avoidable errors, questionable appointments, and opaque processes have eroded public trust, making constant vigilance and accountability essential.

Observers caution that Nigeria cannot afford a transactional presidency where ethical boundaries are repeatedly blurred. For the country to maintain ility and credibility, the presidency must demonstrate transparency, responsibility, and proactive governance.
