The Catholic Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has reaffirmed his commitment to speaking truth to power, urging Nigerians to remain patient yet vigilant as the country navigates persistent political and social challenges.
In a wide ranging interview, Kukah said while Nigeria has made measurable progress, it remains far from where it ought to be. He acknowledged frustration over corruption, political arrogance and the slow pace of reform, but stressed that democracy remains the only viable path forward.
“There is no country that is ever fully ripe for democracy,” he noted, arguing that nation building is a continuous journey requiring sacrifice across generations. Reflecting on Nigeria’s political evolution since the return to civil rule in 1999, he said citizens must learn to work with existing structures while demanding accountability from leaders.
On the 2027 elections, Kukah called for vigilance and civic participation. He encouraged Nigerians to obtain their voter cards and remain engaged beyond moments of public outrage. According to him, sustainable democracy depends on consistent citizen involvement rather than episodic reactions.
Addressing the role of the church, the bishop maintained that religious institutions have contributed significantly through education and moral guidance. However, he emphasised that individual responsibility cannot be outsourced. “After preaching, citizens still have to act responsibly in society,” he said.
Kukah also dismissed claims that he denied the existence of genocide in Nigeria, describing the controversy as a misrepresentation of his remarks at an international forum. He insisted he has consistently condemned violence and injustice, regardless of the government in power.
Reiterating that his interventions are never personal, Kukah said his goal remains the same: a more just, inclusive and accountable Nigeria. He urged both leaders and citizens to embrace dialogue, maturity and shared responsibility in the ongoing task of nation building.
