Nigeria’s electoral credibility faces a critical test following revelations that sensitive voter information was accessed and disclosed without authorization from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration database. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that the breach, which occurred through legitimate official credentials rather than external hacking, places the integrity of the 2027 general election under serious threat before campaigns have even properly commenced. The incident has ignited fierce debate about the vulnerability of Nigeria’s democratic institutions to political manipulation and internal compromise.
In a statement released through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku emphasized that INEC’s own admission made the controversy impossible to dismiss as speculation. While the electoral commission attempted to reassure the public by clarifying that no external cyber had occurred, it simultaneously confirmed that voter data was accessed through valid credentials assigned to personnel involved in the ongoing registration exercise and subsequently released without proper authority. That concession, according to Atiku, raises far more troubling questions than it resolves, particularly regarding internal controls, institutional safeguards, and the potential for deliberate political interference within the commission itself.

Lere Olayinka, spokesman to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, was the source of the leaked voter data. This connection has drawn scrutiny because just days before the controversy erupted, Minister Wike publicly declared with striking certainty that Atiku would not secure even ten percent of votes in Rivers State during the 2027 presidential election. While political predictions are commonplace, the confidence, precision, and finality with which Wike delivered his forecast has fueled suions about whether certain political actors enjoy privileged access to institutions constitutionally required to remain neutral and impartial.
Atiku has demanded full transparency regarding the chain of custody of the accessed information, insisting that Nigerians deserve to know who retrieved the data, who requested it, who received it, and precisely how it departed from INEC’s secure custody. He argued that the absence of external hacking does not diminish the gravity of the breach but rather deepens concerns about insider threats and institutional vulnerability. The former vice president framed the episode as a direct test of whether Nigeria’s electoral bos are genuinely insulated from partisan influence or whether they can be exploited by those with political connections and ambitions. Electoral credibility, he insisted, cannot be elished solely on election day but must be built and maintained through consistent demonstrations of transparency, accountability, and independence.
While Atiku welcomed INEC’s disclosure that it had identified the specific user account involved and questioned relevant personnel, he cautioned that identifying an account represents only the beginning of a proper investigation. He also acknowledged the Department of State Services’ independent involvement in examining the breach. However, he stressed that unless the full circumstances surrounding the unauthorized access are thoroughly investigated and made public, confidence in the electoral process will continue to erode. Nigerians, he argued, cannot be expected to trust a system that appears vulnerable to manipulation from within, particularly when that manipulation appears linked to serving the interests of powerful political figures.
