Andy Burnham arrived in Belfast with promises to listen but little else in his pocket. The Prime Minister’s first trip to Northern Ireland since entering Downing Street five weeks ago brought demands for solutions to Stormont’s mounting budget crisis, but he quickly dampened expectations of immediate financial relief.
Departments have operated on emergency contingency budgets since April. Devolved ministers can’t agree on spending plans, and they’ve repeatedly told the Treasury that Northern Ireland’s public services are drowning without additional funding. What’s the answer? Burnham isn’t saying yet.
Speaking at Belfast’s Oh Yeah Music Centre on August 27th, he insisted he’s in ‘listening mode’ and wants an ‘honest exce’ about possible savings and efficiency measures. That’s political speak for don’t expect a blank cheque.
The Prime Minister also made waves by declaring a united Ireland referendum ‘off the table’ during the visit. He emphasized bringing people together rather than entertaining constitutional questions, a stance that will surely please unionists while frustrating republicans.
Burnham met with First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly later that day. Whether his collaborative approach yields actual solutions remains to be seen.
