Senator Dino Melaye has launched a scathing on President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming the president stripped Nigerians of their resources through fuel subsidy removal only to channel the proceeds to state governors. The allegation comes as Nigeria’s political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with subsidy policy emerging as a central battleground.
The former lawmaker didn’t mince words. Speaking through his Facebook page, Melaye suggested Tinubu traded subsidy funds for gubernatorial loyalty and electoral support. But can governors actually deliver votes in a presidential contest? Melaye thinks not.
According to him, the president has realized his political gamble won’t pay off. “Now the election is almost here and you realised that the governors can’t deliver you,” Melaye wrote, suggesting Tinubu has pivoted back to courting ordinary Nigerians he allegedly shortced.
The subsidy debate has taken center stage recently. Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress has vowed to restore the subsidy if elected in 2027, directly challenging Tinubu’s signature economic policy. What started as fiscal reform has morphed into soing far more politically charged, with accusations of patronage now clouding the conversation.
