Former Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode has congratulated Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat on his emergence as the All Progressives Congress consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Lagos State, while also reaffirming his commitment to the re election of President Bola Tinubu.

Ambode made his position known in a press statement released on Thursday, describing Hamzat as a loyal party member who has consistently demonstrated dedication to unity progress and service within the party.

He praised Hamzat’s emergence as a consensus candidate, noting that it reflected years of loyalty hard work and active participation in party affairs. According to him Hamzat’s long standing involvement in governance and party activities positions him as a capable successor who understands the needs of Lagos State.

Ambode expressed confidence that Lagos would benefit from Hamzat’s experience in public administration and governance, especially given his role as Deputy Governor since 2019 and his previous service as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.

The former governor also used the opportunity to reaffirm his support for President Bola Tinubu, stating that the continued leadership of the President is crucial to the prosperity of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

He pledged to mobilise strong electoral support for the All Progressives Congress at both state and national levels, setting an ambitious target of delivering three million votes for President Tinubu in Lagos State during the 2027 elections.

Ambode further stressed the importance of unity within the party and called for full support for all APC candidates including those contesting senatorial and House of Representatives seats, adding that the goal should be to ensure victory across all levels.

He stated that sustained governance under President Tinubu would continue to advance development and economic growth, both in Lagos and across the country.

Hamzat’s emergence as consensus candidate follows a series of high level endorsements within the Lagos APC structure. Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu had earlier backed him as his preferred successor, while the Governance Advisory Council later adopted him unanimously.

The 34 member council also reportedly agreed to fund the purchase of his nomination form, further solidifying internal party support.

A delegation from the council later presented Hamzat to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he was said to have received the President’s blessing.

Speaking after the meeting, Hamzat acknowledged the scale of responsibility ahead but expressed confidence in his experience and familiarity with governance in Lagos State.

He noted that his years of service in the state government had given him deep insight into administrative processes and policy implementation.

Despite the consensus arrangement, party leaders confirmed that formal primaries would still be conducted in line with All Progressives Congress guidelines.
