The Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State has launched a community-based nutrition programme aimed at addressing malnutrition among children aged 0 to 5 years within the council area.

The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Mr. Johnson Akinpelu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos. He described the initiative as a timely and impactful intervention designed to tackle one of the most pressing child health challenges facing the community.

According to Akinpelu, the programme is being implemented through a strategic partnership between the Health Emergency Initiative and the Nigerian Exce Group, combining public and private sector efforts to improve child nutrition and overall wellbeing.

He explained that the exercise would focus primarily on vulnerable children and their caregivers in District I of the local government area, noting that targeted community interventions are crucial to achieving sustainable health outcomes.

“About 120 children and their caregivers are expected to benefit directly from the programme,” Akinpelu said.

He stressed that malnutrition remains a serious public health concern, with far-reaching consequences for child survival, physical growth, cognitive development, and long-term productivity if not properly addressed.

The chairman outlined key components of the programme to include nutritional screening of children, provision of nutrition support, education for caregivers on proper feeding practices, and referrals to appropriate health facilities where necessary.

Akinpelu added that the initiative reflects the local government’s proactive approach to the early identification, prevention, and effective management of malnutrition, especially among children in underserved communities.

He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to prioritising child health and strengthening community-based healthcare delivery systems, while calling for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to ensure lasting impact.

The programme, according to him, is expected to contribute significantly to reducing malnutrition-related risks and improving the quality of life of children across Alimosho.
