The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing improvements in grassroots governance and fiscal autonomy under his administration.

The endorsement was announced during ALGON’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, where representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were present.

According to the communiqué issued after the meeting, the motion to support Tinubu’s re election was moved by former ALGON President Alabi Kolade David and seconded by Plateau State ALGON chairman Anani Hamisu Mohammed. The association said its decision was based on the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which it claimed has strengthened local government autonomy and improved fiscal capacity.

ALGON National President Bello Lawal presided over the meeting, which also included past leaders of the association. Members passed a vote of confidence in the current leadership, reaffirming unity within the organisation.

However, the meeting also saw disciplinary action, as ALGON announced the suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct. Those affected include officials from Agwara, Kaiama, and Tambuwal Local Government Areas.

The association said the suspended officials were accused of impersonation, actions against ALGON’s interests, and abuse of constitutional provisions. It further warned ministries, departments, agencies, and development partners against engaging with them in any official capacity.

ALGON reiterated its commitment to strengthening local governance structures and ensuring accountability among its members, while maintaining support for its leadership and national policy direction.

The endorsement adds another layer of political backing for President Tinubu as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 election cycle.
