Airport Police Arrest Driver in Fatal Ikeja Hit-and-Run

The Airport Police Command has arrested the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 19-year-old female pedestrian at the Airport Bus Stop, Ikeja, Lagos.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving an Ashok Leyland LAMATA bus with registration number MUS-139-YL. According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Airport Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the victim was struck shortly after alighting from the bus while heading towards the airport. Concerned passersby rushed her to the Air Force Base Hospital, but medical personnel confirmed she was already deceased due to the severity of her injuries.

Following the tragedy, the Airport Police launched an intensive investigation in collaboration with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to track the fleeing driver. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of the suspect, Mr. Adewale Abiodun, who has been taken into custody and made a statement regarding the incident.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, described the accident as a grave and unfortunate loss of life. She assured that justice would be served and warned that negligence and reckless driving would not be tolerated. The commissioner also urged motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent similar trages.

The police stated that the suspect would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction upon the conclusion of investigations.
