After Ratko Mladic’s Death, Where Are the Remaining Yugoslav War Figures

The death of Ratko Mladic on August 28 closes one of the darkest chapters in European history, but it’s hardly the end of the story. The former Bosnian Serb military commander, convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity, spent his final years in a UN detention facility. His passing inevitably raises an uncomfortable question: where are all the others?

The Yugoslav wars tore apart an entire region during the 1990s, leaving over 130,000 dead and millions displaced. Mladic wasn’t acting alone. Dozens of military commanders, political leaders, and paramilitary chiefs orchestrated ethnic cleansing campaigns across Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo.

Some faced justice. Others didn’t. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia prosecuted 161 individuals before closing in 2017, yet tracking down every perpetrator proved impossible. Several d before trial, while others received surprisingly lenient sentences that still anger survivors today.

What became of these figures paints a complicated picture of postwar accountability in the Balkans. Some remain in prison. Others walk free, even holding positions of influence in their communities. The legacy of unpunished war crimes continues casting long shadows across a region still struggling with reconciliation three decades later.
