As Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky faced an immediate threat to his life. Russian operatives reportedly prepared to capture or him, yet Zelensky refused US evacuation offers, famously stating, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” His decision to remain in Kyiv became a symbol of resistance, and approval ratings surged from 37% to 90%.
Over the past four years, Zelensky has survived multiple assassination attempts and navigated corruption scandals that toppled key allies, including his long-time aide Andriy Yermak and former business partner Timur Mindich. Despite these challenges, he has maintained public support, aided by his sful use of informal video communications to address both civilians and frontline solrs.
Zelensky’s leadership has not been without controversy. He clashed with former military chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi, ultimately sacking him in 2024, and faced public backlash over attempts to curb the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdogs. He also experienced tensions with US President Donald Trump, whose hostile stance toward Ukraine culminated in a contentious Oval Office meeting in February 2025. Zelensky’s direct, forceful style initially strained relations but ultimately earned him credibility with both domestic and international aunces.
The war has taken a visible toll on the president, physically and emotionally. Zelensky begins his days at 3–4 a.m., tracking battlefield reports, and the constant stress has left him with worry lines and gray stubble. His wife, Olena Zelenska, described the persistent fear the family experiences. Yet those close to him praise his resilience, humor, and decency, noting that he remains committed to defending Ukraine despite immense pressure.
As Ukraine approaches the fifth year of conflict, Zelensky continues to grapple with a grinding frontline stalemate, ongoing Russian s on energy infrastructure, and the uncertainty of peace negotiations. For many Ukrainians, he remains the leader best positioned to navigate the country through war toward eventual peace.
