The Norwegian Nobel Institute has announced that 287 candidates have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, reflecting sustained global interest in the prestigious honor.

According to the institute, the nominations include 208 individuals and 79 organisations, a figure slightly lower than the record 376 candidates recorded in 2016 but still considered significantly high.

In a statement, the institute noted that despite increasing global conflicts, there remains no shortage of individuals and groups working toward peace and a better future. The organisation described the number of nominations as “consistently high,” underscoring the continued relevance of the prize in a turbulent world.

As per Nobel rules, the identities of nominees are kept strictly confidential for 50 years. However, those eligible to nominate candidates such as lawmakers, former laureates, and university professors are free to publicly disclose their submissions.

Among names reportedly put forward by nominators are Volodymyr Zelensky, climate activist Greta Thunberg, and institutions like the International Criminal Court. There have also been claims that Donald Trump was nominated, although such claims cannot be officially confirmed due to confidentiality rules.

The Nobel Committee reiterated that a nomination does not imply endorsement or selection, as the final decision follows a rigorous review process over several months.

Nominations close on January 31 each year, though committee members can add names during their first meeting in February. The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 9 in Oslo, Norway.
