World Leprosy Day Observed Amid Global Health Awareness Efforts

World Leprosy Day was observed today across the globe to raise awareness about the disease and strengthen efforts to eliminate stigma and expand access to treatment. Marked annually on the last Sunday of January, the day draws attention to ongoing challenges in diagnosing and treating leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease.

Health organizations used the occasion to promote early detection, encourage governments to reinforce public health systems and address the social discrimination faced by people affected by the illness. Despite being curable with multidrug therapy, leprosy continues to impact vulnerable communities, particularly in regions with limited healthcare infrastructure.

The observance highlights the need for sustained global commitment to ensure timely treatment, protect patient rights and support survivors and communities in overcoming long standing barriers to inclusion and well being.
