A centuries-old West African culinary rivalry is making its way to Canada. This Saturday, five chefs representing Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria will compete in Winnipeg’s first-ever jollof rice cooking competition, settling the age-old question of who makes the dish best.
Chef Alex Bockarie is organizing the event at Centre culturel franco-manitobain in St. Boniface. The competition kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 6th at 340 Provencher Boulevard. Admission is free.
What’s driving this passionate contest? Jollof rice, a beloved one-pot dish of rice cooked in tomato-based sauce with es, has sparked friendly debates across West Africa for generations. Each country claims its version reigns supreme, with particularly fierce rivalry between Nigerian and Ghanaian preparations.
The Culinary Crown Cooking Competition represents more than just bragging rights.
