Western Cape Administers Over 1,100 Lenacapavir HIV Prevention Injections as Groundbreaking Rollout Gains Momentum

A revolutionary HIV prevention injection is rapidly gaining traction across South Africa, with the Western Cape administering more than 1,100 doses of Lenacapavir since the program launched in June. Provincial health authorities report that uptake of the long acting preventative treatment has exceeded initial expectations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against HIV transmission.

Lenacapavir represents a paradigm shift in HIV prevention strategy, offering up to 28 weeks of protection from a single injection with an effectiveness rate exceeding 96 percent. This stands in stark contrast to daily oral pre exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, which requires consistent daily adherence and has faced challenges with patient compliance. The Western Cape has distributed doses from an initial stock of 29,000 injections, targeting high risk areas where HIV transmission rates remain stubbornly elevated. Meanwhile, Gauteng province has already reached 6,000 recipients, suggesting strong demand for the innovative prevention od across urban centers.

Provincial health departments emphasize that Lenacapavir is designed to complement rather than replace existing prevention tools. Condoms and daily oral PrEP remain critical components of comprehensive HIV prevention strategies. However, the long acting nature of Lenacapavir addresses a key barrier to prevention: the difficulty many people face in maintaining daily medication routines or consistent condom use. Public health experts view the injection as particularly valuable for populations at elevated risk who may struggle with traditional prevention ods.

In separate developments that underscore ongoing governance challenges, authorities arrested Kemi Behari, the suspended Head of Legal Services for the City of Ekurhuleni. Behari faces allegations that emerged during testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where evidence suggested he improperly shielded Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Police Department Chief Julius Mkhwanazi from disciplinary proceedings. Officers apprehended Behari at the city’s Germiston offices, following revelations about Mkhwanazi’s alleged connections to suspected crime boss Vusimuzi Matlala. The Police Investigative Directorate had determined in 2023 that Mkhwanazi should face urgent disciplinary action over the relationship.

Eastern Cape police have made progress in investigating the of ANC ward councillor Sicelo Mleve, arresting a second suspect in connection with the ing. Authorities took 21 year old Ahlumile Stofile into custody on Monday, and he is scheduled to appear alongside co accused Lufunolwethu Nyodi at the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Friday for formal bail proceedings. Mleve was fatally shot during a community meeting in Zwide last month, a ing that sent shockwaves through local government circles. Investigators say they continue pursuing additional individuals believed to be responsible for the assassination.

As South Africa continues expanding access to Lenacapavir across provinces, health officials will be monitoring uptake rates and effectiveness in real world conditions. The initial rollout figures suggest strong community interest in long acting HIV prevention options, potentially signaling a new chapter in the country’s decades long effort to reduce new infections. Success of the program could provide a template for other nations grappling with high HIV prevalence, particularly in sub Saharan Africa where innovative prevention strategies remain desperately needed.
