Wall Street Stumbles as Investors Brace for Nvidia Earnings and Bond Market Turmoil

U.S. markets closed in mixed territory Monday as investors positioned themselves for a potentially volatile week ahead. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% to 7,652.86, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed a 140-point gain. The Nasdaq composite took the hardest hit, dropping 0.8%.

Technology stocks bore the brunt of selling pressure. Nvidia, Wall Street’s most influential company, fell 2.9% as traders nervously await its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday, August 24, 2026. That single announcement could reshape sentiment across the entire artificial intelligence sector. Micron Technology plunged 5.8%, and Broadcom declined 2.6%, adding to the tech rout.

What’s really spooking investors? The bond market tells a troubling story. Treasury yields have climbed steadily through summer on inflation fears and mounting government debt concerns. Higher borrowing costs aren’t just Washington’s problem. Mortgage rates have already jumped, hammering the housing sector and threatening to slow the broader economy.

The Treasury Department made an unexpected move last week to increase planned bond buybacks, aiming to ilize yields on longer-term securities. Early signs suggest the intervention might be working, though it’s too early to declare victory in calming jittery markets.
