Victor Osimhen: Hunger to Win or Misunderstood Temper?

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has found himself at the center of debate following a minor spat with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s 2–0 win over Algeria at AFCON 2025. The incident arose when Lookman failed to pass to Osimhen, who was well-positioned to score, prompting accusations of selfishness against the Galatasaray forward.

Osimhen defended himself, stressing that even though Nigeria was already leading 3-0, the team should aim to score as many goals as possible, since goal difference can be decisive in group standings. His critics argue that his reaction towards Lookman and captain Wilfred Ndidi was unnecessarily aggressive, fueling tension within the squad.

Historically, the Super Eagles have seen similar moments. In 1993, Rashidi Yekini experienced a missed pass from Samson Siasia against Côte d’Ivoire but reacted calmly, allowing team management to address issues without creating internal friction. The lesson is clear: hunger for goals and ambition are not synonymous with arrogance or indiscipline.

Osimhen’s passion and drive are vital for Nigeria’s success, but he must learn to control his temper and maintain harmony on the pitch. Coaches and the NFF have a role to play in guiding him, ensuring that his fiery competitiveness enhances rather than hinders team cohesion.

As the Super Eagles prepare for the semi-finals against Morocco, it is crucial that Osimhen channels his intensity positively. Talent and ambition are assets, but managing emotions is equally important in sustaining a rising international career.
