The head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has announced plans to expand his player selection pool ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup by scouting talents from both the Nigeria Premier Football League and Europe.
Nigeria will defend its title at the Unity Cup scheduled to take place in London from May 26 to 30, where the team is set to face India, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe in a competitive international showcase.
Chelle said the tournament will serve as a key opportunity to assess new players and strengthen the squad as part of his long term rebuilding process. He explained that he intends to monitor both domestic and foreign based players closely in the coming months.
He noted that players of Nigerian descent in Europe who have not yet been fully integrated into the national team setup will be considered, alongside those previously invited but yet to make their competitive debut.
The coach also stressed the importance of rewarding top performers in the Nigeria Premier Football League, stating that consistent domestic form will be a major factor in national team selection.
Beyond the Unity Cup, the Super Eagles are scheduled to play high profile friendly matches in June against Poland and Portugal, fixtures Chelle described as crucial for improving Nigeria’s international ranking and team development.
He confirmed that a strong first team squad will be used for those encounters, emphasizing the need for cohesion and competitiveness against top European opposition.
The Unity Cup and upcoming friendlies are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of the national team as Chelle continues to refine his squad ahead of major international competitions.
