General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, confirmed the drawdown on Thursday during a press briefing following the African Chiefs of Defence Conference 2026, emphasizing that America’s security partnership with Nigeria remains intact despite the troop pullback.
Anderson described the counterterrorism operation in Nigeria’s Lake Chad Basin region as a success with global ramifications, noting that disrupting ISIS networks in the area benefited not only neighboring countries but the international community at large. The mission, which involved US military personnel working alongside Nigerian forces, has now transitioned to a more limited footprint focused on intelligence cooperation and advisory support. According to Anderson, Nigerian authorities specifically requested the continuation of intelligence sharing capabilities to maintain pressure on terrorist organizations operating within their borders.
Nigeria possesses one of the most capable military forces on the African continent, and the partnership with American intelligence assets has yielded significant operational successes.
