The United States government has announced plans to organise an evacuation flight for American citizens aboard a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak. The vessel is currently heading to the Canary Islands, where authorities are preparing for the arrival of passengers and further medical assessments.

According to a spokesperson for the US State Department, arrangements are already underway to ensure the safe return of Americans onboard the ship. The spokesperson stated that the department is working closely with the Spanish government and several US federal agencies to coordinate the evacuation process and provide support for affected passengers.

The cruise ship is expected to arrive in Tenerife, Spain, where American citizens onboard will receive consular assistance and guidance from US officials. Authorities said communication has already been elished with the passengers to keep them informed about safety measures and evacuation plans.

Earlier reports from the ship operator revealed that at least 17 Americans were onboard the vessel.

However, the State Department has not yet confirmed the exact number of US citizens affected by the situation.

The World Health Organization also disclosed that nationals from 12 different countries had previously disembarked from the ship at Saint Helena. Health authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely as concerns grow over the spread of the hantavirus infection.

Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease that is usually transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, breathing difficulties, and severe respiratory complications in some cases.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about health safety measures on international cruise ships and the preparedness of governments to respond quickly to potential outbreaks involving travelers from multiple countries.
