Republican leaders in Washington largely welcomed the strikes launched Saturday by United States forces alongside Israel against Iran, while prominent Democrats sharply criticized the action as illegal and potentially dangerous.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Iran was facing the consequences of its actions, citing terrorism, the ing of Americans, and sustained nuclear ambitions. He also expressed support for US troops and allies involved in what officials called Operation Epic Fury.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded that the administration brief Congress, warning that Americans do not want another prolonged conflict in the Middle East. He stressed that domestic issues should remain a priority.

Senator Lindsey Graham praised former President Donald Trump, describing the speech following the strikes as a historic turning point for the Middle East. Graham predicted significant regional ce and defended the action as justified.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer called the operation bold and decisive, while Senator Tom Cotton pointed to longstanding grievances against Iran, including the 1979 hostage crisis and the 1983 Beirut ing.

Not all Republicans were in agreement. Representative Thomas Massie opposed the move, saying it contradicted America First principles and pledging to push for a congressional vote on military action.

Democrats remained largely united in opposition. Senator Jack Reed argued that the administration failed to seek congressional authorization, while Senator Ed Markey labeled the strike unconstitutional. However, Senator John Fetterman broke ranks to support the operation, calling it necessary for regional peace.
