US Health Department Launches Plan to Promote Wider Use of AI Technology

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a detailed strategy to enhance the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across its divisions, aiming to improve operational efficiency and innovate healthcare delivery. The 20-page plan outlines five key pillars: elishing governance for AI risk management, developing AI tools, empowering staff usage, funding research and development standards, and integrating AI into public health and patient care. A notable aspect is promoting a “try-first” culture that encourages employees to experiment with AI technologies to boost productivity. Earlier this year, HHS made the AI model ChatGPT accessible to all department employees.

This initiative builds on previous efforts to modernize healthcare through AI and reflects a bipartisan dedication to technological progress. Nonetheless, concerns have arisen regarding the safeguarding of sensitive health data. Experts stress the importance of robust data protection, particularly regarding personal health information. Oren Etzioni, an AI expert, emphasized the need to balance innovation with safety, advocating for responsible pursuit of the strategy’s ambitious goals to protect health data. Darrell West from the Brookings Institution noted that while the plan aims to strengthen risk management, it lacks clarity on handling sensitive medical information.

The strategy anticipates a significant increase in AI projects, projecting a 70% rise in the 2025 fiscal year compared to the prior year, underscoring HHS’s commitment to leveraging AI for modernizing healthcare services. However, the plan has faced criticism for insufficient details regarding risk management and data protection strategies. Critics argue that without clear guidelines, implementation could face challenges. Despite these issues, if executed responsibly, the strategy holds the potential to greatly enhance HHS’s performance and efficiency.
