The Nigeria Customs Service Trade Modernisation Project is expected to enhance ease of doing business, improve trade facilitation, strengthen revenue generation and raise the standard of national security across the country.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this during a workshop for journalists on the Nigeria Customs Service Trade Modernisation Project held in Abuja.
Speaking through the Deputy Comptroller General in charge of Investigation, Enforcement and Inspection, Timi Bomadi, Adeniyi explained that the project would also improve transparency, professionalism and service excellence within the customs system.
According to him, customs administrations across the world are adapting to emerging realities driven by technology, data and increasing demands for efficiency, transparency and accountability. He stated that the Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to aligning with global standards while effectively carrying out its core responsibilities of revenue generation, trade facilitation and border security.
Adeniyi described the Trade Modernisation Project as a major technology driven initiative designed to overhaul customs processes, eliminate inefficiencies and create a more seamless and predictable trading environment for businesses operating in Nigeria.
He added that through the deployment of modern digital platforms, automation of procedures and integration of systems, the service is building a customs administration that will be more efficient and globally competitive.
The Customs boss also stressed the importance of the media in ensuring the success of the reform programme. According to him, infrastructure and technology alone are not enough without stakeholder understanding, acceptance and participation.
Welcoming participants at the workshop, National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, said the event formed part of the service’s commitment to transparency and effective communication.
Maiwada explained that the workshop was designed to improve media knowledge, deepen public understanding and strengthen awareness of the Nigeria Customs Service Trade Modernisation Project.
The initiative is expected to support smoother trade operations, reduce delays at borders and ports and improve the overall efficiency of customs processes in Nigeria.
