The University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students over offences ranging from examination malpractice and cult related activities to the falsification of admission records.
The decision was reached at a recent meeting of the university’s Senate, according to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information, Habib Yakoob. He explained that the sanctions followed a detailed review of findings and recommendations submitted by the institution’s Student Disciplinary Committee.
According to the statement, the affected students were found culpable of various forms of misconduct, including alleged threats to life, physical assault, conspiracy, burglary and theft. Other offences listed include cultism, possession and use of hard drugs, and involvement in examination malpractice.
The university also disclosed that some of the expelled students were accused of uploading falsified O Level results on the institution’s admission portal. Others reportedly failed to honour repeated invitations to appear before the disciplinary panel to respond to allegations against them.
In a related development, the Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates previously issued to 15 former students who allegedly ignored several summonses by the disciplinary committee. Meanwhile, nine students investigated in connection with the cases were cleared of wrongdoing and formally exonerated.
Additionally, 33 students received official warnings for various acts of misconduct, including conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.
The Vice Chancellor, Hakeem Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to upholding discipline and maintaining academic integrity. He stressed that the university would not compromise on standards necessary to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.
Fawehinmi also commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for its thorough handling of the cases and advised students to conduct themselves responsibly to safeguard their academic future.
