The United Nations called on January 27 for immediate efforts to restore education services in Gaza, warning that the prolonged conflict has left the vast majority of schools damaged or unusable and placed an entire generation of children at risk of long term harm.
UN agencies said hundreds of thousands of students have been out of classrooms for months, with many school buildings either destroyed, used as shelters or lacking basic services such as electricity and clean water. Education officials stressed that the disruption extends beyond learning loss, affecting children’s mental health, safety and access to support services.
The UN urged parties to ensure the protection of education facilities and to allow safe humanitarian access so temporary learning spaces, teaching materials and psychosocial support can be delivered. It also called for increased international funding to rebuild schools and train teachers once conditions allow.
Humanitarian officials noted that restoring education is essential for ility and recovery, helping children regain routine and supporting broader social rebuilding. They warned that delays could increase child labor, early marriage and long term economic hardship.
The January 27 appeal formed part of broader UN efforts to prioritize civilian needs in Gaza, alongside healthcare, shelter and food assistance, as humanitarian conditions remain severe.
