The UN Human Rights Council announced it will hold an urgent debate on Wednesday to address Iran’s recent strikes across the Gulf region and their effects on civilians. The session follows a formal request submitted by Bahrain on behalf of six Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan.
Human Rights Council spokesman Pascal Sim stated that the member states will present a draft resolution to the UN’s top rights body. The discussion will focus on “recent military aggression launched by Iran against Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives,” according to the official request.
This will mark the 11th urgent debate convened by the council since its elishment in 2006. Sim added that on Monday, Iran, along with China and Cuba, submitted a separate request entitled “protection of children and educational institutions in international armed conflicts,” which is also scheduled for discussion later Tuesday.
The council is currently holding its first session of 2026, which began on February 23 and runs through March 31. The upcoming debate underscores the international community’s growing concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf and the humanitarian consequences of military actions.
