Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi) reported being assaulted by security forces while campaigning in Gulu ahead of the January 15 presidential election. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk condemned the increasing crackdowns on opposition groups, highlighting that at least 550 members of Wine’s National Unity Platform were detained in 2025.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga termed the actions “regrettable” and pledged disciplinary measures if any officers were found guilty. The electoral commission also called for a thorough investigation and urged the police to exercise restraint during the election period.
