UEFA has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated ‘Finalissima’ clash between Spain, winners of Euro 2024, and Argentina, reigning World Cup champions, which was scheduled for March 27 in Qatar.

According to UEFA, it was “not possible to reach agreement with Argentina” over an alternative date and location due to the ongoing Middle East war affecting the region. The governing body expressed disappointment that circumstances prevented the two teams from competing for the prestigious trophy.

The Finalissima pits the latest Copa America winners against European championship winners. Argentina won the inaugural edition in 2022 by defeating Italy at Wembley in London. The match against Spain would have marked a historic first meeting between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, widely regarded as Messi’s successor.

UEFA explored multiple alternatives to playing in Qatar. The first option, holding the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, was rejected by Argentina. A two-legged event, with matches in Madrid on March 27 and Buenos Aires before the 2028 Euros and Copa America, was also declined. A one-off match at another neutral European venue on March 27 or March 30 was similarly rejected, as Argentina indicated availability only on March 31.

“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” UEFA said, confirming that no agreement could be reached to stage the match safely and fairly.

The cancellation marks a disappointment for football fans worldwide, who had eagerly anticipated the showdown between Messi’s Argentina and Spain, showcasing top talent from both Europe and South America. UEFA expressed hope that future editions could proceed without disruptions.
