Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticized US President Donald Trump’s promise to pay every American adult $5,000 if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in upcoming midterm elections. The former lawmaker said America now emulates African electoral practices.
Trump made the pledge at the Republican Party’s midterm convention. With approximately 270 million American adults eligible, analysts estimate the proposal would cost around $1.35 trillion. That’s a staggering sum for any government.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our tremendous economic success, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump told convention attendees.
Sani didn’t hold back his assessment. “Trump is promising every American $5k if his party wins. Africa used to emulate American democracy; America is now emulating African democracy,” he wrote on X. The comment references a practice familiar across several African nations where politicians promise cash handouts or material benefits in exce for electoral support.
The proposal raises questions about campaign finance, fiscal responsibility, and the cing nature of democratic competition in elished democracies.
