United States President Donald Trump has insisted that the ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in effect despite renewed military clashes involving Iranian forces and American warships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions escalated after Iranian forces reportedly launched missiles drones and small boats toward three US destroyers operating in the strategic waterway. According to the US Central Command CENTCOM none of the American warships were hit as US forces intercepted the threats and responded with strikes targeting Iranian military facilities linked to the .
Iran however accused the United States of violating the truce first claiming American forces ed an oil tanker and another vessel before Tehran responded by targeting US military ships in retaliation.
Speaking in Washington Trump maintained that the ceasefire remained active despite the exce of fire. The US president said Iran had “trifled” with the United States and warned that future responses would be more forceful if Tehran failed to agree to a new deal regarding its nuclear programme.
The latest violence threatens the fragile truce that took effect on April 8 following weeks of military confrontation involving the United States Israel and Iran. The conflict had triggered retaliatory strikes across the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most important oil and gas shipping routes.
The United Arab Emirates also confirmed that its air defence systems engaged missile and drone s originating from Iran raising fears of wider regional inility.
Meanwhile diplomatic efforts continue as Pakistan works as a mediator between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran would communicate its official position after internal consultations.
The conflict has also increased tensions in Lebanon where renewed violence involving Hezbollah and Israel threatens an already fragile ceasefire arrangement.
Global concerns are also growing over shipping disruptions in the Gulf region with thousands of crew members and vessels reportedly stranded due to ongoing security risks around the Strait of Hormuz.
