Manchester United secured a commanding 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, but not without raising questions about defensive lapses. Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson singled out Lisandro Martinez for harsh criticism after the Argentine’s error led to a late consolation goal for the visitors.
Bruno Fernandes stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick, helping the Red Devils overturn an early deficit. Leif Davis opened scoring for Ipswich in the 29th minute before Fernandes equalised 11 minutes later. After the interval, Jacob Greaves’ own goal put United ahead, and Fernandes added two more, including a 61st minute penalty. Bryan Mbeumo completed the rout in the 82nd minute.
Still, the final moments brought controversy. Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time after Julio Enciso dispossessed Martinez, who Robinson accused of overconfidence. “Manchester United switched off there,” Robinson stated on BBC Radio 5 Live. The goal marked a personal milestone for the Super Eagles hopeful. It was his first ever Premier League goal after 97 minutes of action across six appearances for Arsenal and Ipswich combined.
A separate handball incident involving Harry Maguire in the build-up to United’s second goal also sparked debate, though VAR upheld the on-field decision. Referee Craig Pawson allowed the goal to stand despite furious protests from Ipswich players.
