The Director of the US National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent has resigned in protest over the ongoing war involving United States Israel and Iran marking one of the most high profile departures from the administration of Donald Trump since the conflict began.

Kent who advised both the president and the intelligence community said in his resignation letter that Iran posed no immediate threat to the United States and argued that the war was driven by external pressure. He stated that he could not support continued military engagement that he believes does not serve American interests.

His resignation came as tensions intensified with reports that Iran’s new leader Mojtaba Khamenei rejected efforts to de escalate the conflict delivered through intermediaries.

Meanwhile Israel claimed it ed senior Iranian figure Ali Larijani in overnight airstrikes along with the Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani. Iran has confirmed Soleimani’s death but has yet to verify Larijani’s ing which if true would represent a major blow to the country’s political structure following the earlier death of Ali Khamenei.

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz described the strikes as targeting key figures within Iran’s leadership and security network.

Global concerns are also mounting as the United Nations warned that the conflict could push an additional 45 million people into acute hunger if it continues. The World Food Programme noted rising shipping costs and supply disruptions are already worsening food insecurity worldwide.

In the Gulf region Anwar Gargash indicated that United Arab Emirates may support international efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz a critical global oil route.

As the conflict deepens the humanitarian economic and political consequences continue to expand raising fears of prolonged inility across the Middle East and beyond.
