Togo has announced a major step toward African integration by opening its borders to citizens from all African countries, allowing visa free entry for travelers across the continent.
The new policy officially took effect on Monday and grants African passport holders a 30 day visa free stay in Togo. The announcement was made by the country’s Ministry of Security on Tuesday.
According to Security Minister Calixte Madjoulba, the decision reflects Togo’s commitment to promoting African unity, strengthening regional cooperation and encouraging easier movement of people and goods across the continent.
The government said the initiative forms part of a broader vision aimed at positioning Togo as a leading regional hub for business, services, culture and human exce in Africa. Authorities believe the policy will also improve tourism, trade opportunities and economic partnerships with other African nations.
Despite the removal of traditional visa requirements, travelers will still be expected to comply with existing immigration, health and security regulations. Visitors are required to complete an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arrival. The process will generate an official travel document that must be presented at border entry points.
The Togolese government stressed that the visa free policy should not be abused for illegal entry or unlawful residency. Security checks and border monitoring will remain fully operational across land, air and sea borders.
With the announcement, Togo joins a growing list of African countries such as Rwanda and Kenya that have embraced open border policies in support of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision for a more connected and borderless Africa.
The development also comes shortly after Nigeria introduced a similar 30 day visa free entry arrangement for Rwandan citizens, signalling growing momentum toward easier travel and regional integration across Africa.
Many observers believe the policy could strengthen economic growth, tourism and diplomatic relations among African countries while encouraging greater continental cooperation in the years ahead.
