Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, known globally as Davido, has found himself at the center of a social media firestorm after publicly lamenting the failure of entertainers to speak out against injustice in Nigeria. What began as a moment of self reflection quickly escalated into a bitter confrontation with critics who questioned the sincerity of his newfound activism, exposing the precarious position celebrities occupy when attempting to engage with political issues in Africa’s most populous nation.

In a candid post shared with his millions of followers, Davido pulled no punches in his assessment of the entertainment industry’s collective silence. “I can’t lie, we entertainers… we dey up, I won’t lie, including me. We need to speak up. It’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go,” the artist wrote, using Nigerian pidgin to convey his frustration with the deteriorating state of affairs. His admission of complicity in this silence marked a notable shift for a celebrity who has previously faced criticism for his perceived political connections and reluctance to challenge authority.

Not everyone welcomed this apparent ce of heart. A social media user operating under the handle Princess Luna responded with withering scorn, accusing the artist of performative activism and insincerity. “Na God go punish you and your family. Go and do that performative rubbish in your City Boys group chat and get out of my face with all this pretentious nonsense. Na foolish Nigerians I blame,” she wrote, referencing allegations of the singer’s association with elite political circles.

Davido’s response was swift and equally harsh. He vehemently denied membership in any political group and pointed to previous instances where he had criticized the government, only to face backlash from the very citizens he claimed to advocate for. “I no dey part of any City Boy group. When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me,” he wrote, before acknowledging his longstanding friendship with individuals in political circles while insisting these relationships did not compromise his independence. He concluded his rebuttal with his own curse, telling the critic “God punish your generation.”

The heated exce highlights the increasingly fraught relationship between Nigerian celebrities and their aunces when it comes to political engagement. Artists who remain silent are accused of complicity and享受 privilege while ordinary citizens suffer. Yet those who do speak out often face accusations of opportunism, performative activism, or insufficient commitment to the cause. Davido himself has experienced this whiplash effect, having previously faced criticism when he spoke to international media about Nigeria’s challenges during election periods.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges under the current administration, pressure is mounting on public figures to use their platforms for advocacy. Whether Davido’s latest outburst represents a genuine shift toward more consistent activism or simply a momentary expression of frustration remains to be seen. What is certain is that Nigerian aunces are increasingly skeptical of celebrity political interventions, demanding sustained engagement rather than sporadic social media posts. How the entertainment industry navigates this new expectation for social responsibility may well define its relationship with fans for years to come.
