Tiwa Savage has opened up about her journey from R and B music to Afrobeats after returning to Nigeria in 2012, describing the transition as initially difficult but ultimately rewarding.
The award winning singer explained that moving back home marked a turning point in her career. Before relocating, Savage had built experience abroad, working as a backup singer for global stars like George Michael and Mary J Blige. However, the rapid growth of the Nigerian music industry at the time inspired her to embrace a new direction.
After signing with Mavin Records, Savage said she encountered challenges adapting her sound from R and B to a more locally resonant Afrobeats style. According to her, the shift required stepping outside her comfort zone and exploring unfamiliar musical influences.
She credited her former label boss Don Jazzy for playing a major role in helping her navigate the ce. Speaking in a recent interview, Savage noted that he encouraged her to see her talent as limitless and pushed her to experiment with different sounds.
“He made me believe that talent was not limited and that I could do anything if I truly focused on it,” she said, adding that he helped her break free from what she described as an R and B bubble.
Savage also highlighted that despite the early difficulties, the transition allowed her to connect more deeply with her aunce and contribute to the evolving Afrobeats scene. Songs like Kele Kele Love helped elish her as a leading voice in the industry.
Reflecting on her decision, the singer expressed no regrets about returning to Nigeria or cing her musical path, noting that the experience shaped her growth and success.
