President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two day official visit to the United Kingdom last week has been hailed as historic, showcasing Nigeria’s growing influence on the international stage. The visit, which concluded on March 19, included a state reception at Windsor Castle where His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla received President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. The President reviewed the guard of honour, witnessed a 42 gun salute by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, and attended a state banquet, marking him as the first Nigerian leader formally hosted at Windsor Castle.
The visit highlighted Nigeria’s economic reforms under the Tinubu administration, which have ilised the Naira, modernised the tax system, and improved the investment climate. Historically, the last similar visit was by military President Ibrahim Babangida in 1989, but Tinubu’s trip carried the added weight of a 27 year old democracy and a more vibrant international presence.
During his stay, President Tinubu held bilateral and business meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, discussing trade, investment, climate ce, terrorism, and other global challenges. Both leaders emphasised the strong Nigeria UK partnership. Trade between the countries currently totals £8.1 billion, with Nigerian crude exports at £1.0 billion and UK refined oil exports at £1.6 billion.
A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a £746 million financing deal for the refurbishment of Apapa Quays and Tincan Port Complexes. Nigerian banks including Zenith Bank and Fidelity Bank also discussed expanding operations in the UK. King Charles and President Tinubu praised growing collaborations in education, technology, and trade, underlining the long-term mutually beneficial partnership.
Before departing, President Tinubu attended an art exhibition at Tate Modern sponsored by Access Bank, celebrating Nigerian creativity and resilience. The visit is expected to deepen economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UK for years to come.
