President Bola Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress APC to embrace unity discipline and sportsmanship as the party begins its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement marking the start of the exercise Tinubu described the primaries as a critical test of the party’s strength resilience and internal cohesion. The process will begin with House of Representatives contests and culminate in the presidential primaries scheduled for May 25 2026.

The President said the primaries are more than just elections to select candidates but a reflection of the party’s shared values and collective identity. He urged aspirants and delegates to approach the exercise as a family competition rather than a divisive political battle.

Tinubu praised ongoing efforts within the party to adopt consensus based arrangements in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution noting that such measures help reduce internal conflict and strengthen unity.

Where consensus is not achieved the President urged contestants to conduct themselves peacefully and accept outcomes in the spirit of sportsmanship. He warned against any form of rancorous behaviour that could weaken the party ahead of the national elections.

He also advised winners not to celebrate in ways that could humiliate opponents while urging those who lose to remain loyal and prepare for future opportunities. According to him the real goal is to strengthen the party rather than divide it.

Tinubu emphasised the importance of inclusiveness particularly calling for greater participation of women and young people in the primaries. He said these groups remain essential to the future of Nigeria’s political development.

The President further instructed party leaders governors and officials to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants while maintaining fairness and transparency throughout the process. He also tasked security agencies to remain professional and focus strictly on ensuring peaceful conduct during the primaries.

Reaffirming the founding principles of the APC Tinubu said the party was built on progressive politics consensus democracy and selfless service to the nation. He expressed confidence that unity within the party would be key to future electoral success.
