Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate requesting the screening and confirmation of fifteen nominees for the board of the National Human Rights Commission, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s human rights framework.
The letter, read on the Senate floor by Godswill Akpabio, outlines the need to reconstitute the commission’s board in line with statutory provisions. According to the president, the move is essential to enhance the commission’s institutional capacity and improve its ability to promote and protect human rights nationwide.
Among the أبرز nominees is Eze Anaba, President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors and Editor at Vanguard Newspapers. Also nominated is Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman, who has been proposed as chairman of the board. Anthony Ojukwu is expected to serve as Executive Secretary if confirmed.
Other nominees include individuals from diverse professional backgrounds such as law enforcement, academia, media, and diplomacy. The list features Roseline Tasha, Ambassador Adam Yubak Baku, Felix Lawrence, Edmund Chinonye, Chinonye Obiaku, Oluwakemi Asiwaju Okere Odo, Professor Adedeji Ogunji, Kingsley Chidozie, Mohammed Adelodu, Maupe Ogun Yusuf, Otunba Francis Meshioye, Patience Patrick, and Hawwa Ibrahim.
Tinubu stated that the nominations were made in accordance with the National Human Rights Commission Elishment Act 2010, which empowers the president to constitute the board subject to Senate approval.
Following the presentation, the Senate referred the nominees to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening. The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
If confirmed, the new board will play a vital role in strengthening oversight functions and addressing growing concerns around human rights protection and accountability in Nigeria.
