Tesla received a major boost to its autonomous vehicle ambitions after Clark County, Nevada, approved the electric vehicle manufacturer to deploy up to 5,000 driverless robotaxis in Las Vegas, representing the largest share of permits granted to any company. The authorization, announced Thursday, allows Tesla, Alphabet’s Waymo, and Uber to collectively operate as many as 8,000 robotaxis on local roads over the next year, with Tesla securing more than 60 percent of the total allocation.

Tesla shares climbed 5.1 percent on Friday following the announcement, significantly outperforming both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, which each gained 0.4 percent. Additional momentum came from news that Tesla plans to showcase its all-electric semi truck at an international transportation expo in Germany, signaling preparations for a European market launch. Much of Tesla’s current market valuation depends on revenue streams that have yet to materialize, making regulatory approvals for autonomous vehicles particularly significant for investor confidence.

Meanwhile, in international diplomacy, Georgia declined to participate in the European Union’s newest sanctions package against Iran, asserting that its foreign policy decisions prioritize national interests above alignment with international measures. Tengiz Sharmanashvili, representing Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party in parliament, stated that if a decision conflicts with Georgian interests, the question of whose interests it serves becomes irrelevant. Sharmanashvili pointed to Turkey and Serbia, both EU candidate countries, as examples of nations similarly abstaining from the sanctions.

The contrasting developments highlight how both corporations and nations increasingly chart independent courses based on strategic calculations. Tesla’s Las Vegas expansion represents a critical test for autonomous vehicle technology at commercial scale, while Georgia’s diplomatic stance reflects the complex balancing act facing countries navigating relationships between major global powers.
