Tehran Activates Air Defences as US Iran War Standoff Deepens

Air defence systems in Tehran were activated late Thursday to intercept drones and small aircraft, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate despite a fragile ceasefire.

Iranian news agencies reported that the defence systems were active for about 20 minutes in parts of the capital before the situation returned to normal. The incident comes amid growing geopolitical strain and uncertainty surrounding the ongoing conflict.

In Washington, President Donald Trump’s administration is facing pressure over a congressional deadline tied to the war. However, officials signalled that the White House does not consider itself bound by the timeline, arguing that hostilities effectively ended following a ceasefire reached in April.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared that the United States had suffered a “shameful defeat” in the conflict. In a televised statement, he asserted that Iran now holds strategic control over key waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.

The United States has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports, a move Tehran has described as an extension of military aggression. In response, Washington is working to build an international coalition to secure shipping routes while sustaining pressure on Iran.

Tensions have also spilled into the wider Middle East, with Israel warning of potential renewed military action and clashes continuing in Lebanon. The situation has raised fears of a broader regional conflict.

Global markets have reacted sharply, with oil prices surging to multi year highs amid concerns over supply disruptions. International leaders, including Antonio Guterres, have warned that continued inility could have severe consequences for the global economy.

As diplomatic efforts stall, calls for dialogue are intensifying, with growing urgency to prevent further escalation in what is increasingly seen as a critical moment for global security.
