Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will hold crucial meetings on December 3 with key stakeholders in Indian football to address the ongoing crisis affecting the sport. This situation arose when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was unable to secure a new commercial partner for the Indian Super League (ISL) and other domestic leagues. The current 15-year Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) is set to expire on December 8, 2025. In July, FSDL placed the league on hold due to uncertainties regarding the MRA’s renewal.
Responding to this crisis, the Supreme Court directed the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to facilitate a resolution. As a result, the Sports Ministry is organizing a series of discussions at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters in New Delhi. These meetings will include sessions with ISL clubs, I-League teams, FSDL, prospective commercial partners, broadcasters, and OTT platforms. A joint meeting with all stakeholders is also on the agenda to encourage comprehensive discussions.
The AIFF has expressed its openness to flexible solutions during these talks. It is reportedly willing to reduce the annual minimum guaranteed payment of ₹37.5 crore or 5% of gross revenue for the next five years, contingent on receiving financial backing from the government.
The outcome of these discussions is pivotal for the future of Indian football, as it seeks to navigate these challenges and create a sustainable framework for its domestic competitions. The attempt to rally all stakeholders for collaborative solutions underlines the urgency of resolving the current impasse in the sport.
