South Korea Launches Nationwide Review of Artificial Intelligence Safety Standards

South Korean officials announced on February 1 2026 the launch of a comprehensive national review of artificial intelligence safety standards as the country accelerates adoption of advanced technologies across government and industry. The initiative aims to assess potential risks linked to AI systems including data misuse algorithmic bias and threats to critical infrastructure.

The science and technology ministry said the review will involve regulators academic experts private sector developers and civil society groups. Authorities plan to evaluate existing laws and recommend updates to ensure AI deployment remains transparent ethical and secure. Special attention will be given to systems used in healthcare finance public administration and national security.

Officials stressed that the review is not intended to slow innovation but to build public trust and long term ility. South Korea is among the leading global investors in artificial intelligence and views safety governance as essential to maintaining competitiveness.

Experts welcomed the move saying proactive oversight could prevent future harm while positioning South Korea as a global leader in responsible AI development. Findings from the review are expected to guide future legislation and international cooperation.
