The South Korean government has launched a formal investigation into suspected drone incursions believed to have originated from North Korea, according to defence officials in Seoul. Military authorities reported that unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles were detected crossing into restricted airspace, prompting surveillance operations and rapid response measures.

Air defence units were placed on alert as fighter aircraft and reconnaissance assets were deployed to monitor the situation. Officials stated that the drones were small and difficult to track, complicating efforts to confirm their origin and precise flight paths. No significant damage has been publicly reported, though authorities acknowledged the potential security implications of such incidents.

The defence ministry said it is reviewing detection systems and response protocols to strengthen airspace monitoring capabilities. Analysts note that unmanned aerial vehicles have become an increasingly prominent feature of regional security dynamics, raising concerns about reconnaissance and intelligence gathering activities.

North Korea has not issued an immediate response to the allegations. The development adds to persistent tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where military readiness remains high amid intermittent diplomatic engagement.

Seoul emphasised that it will coordinate with allies to ensure deterrence and safeguard national sovereignty.
