Nkosinathi Mathebula had embarked on what he hoped would be a transformative trip from South Africa to Malawi, accompanied by Mbalangwe, to consult with a renowned local prophet about healing possibilities for his nephew back home. The two men had traveled together across international borders, sharing the long journey and presumably the costs and companionship that such a trip entails. Their mission was deeply personal, rooted in the hope that traditional spiritual intervention might offer solutions where conventional approaches had perhaps fallen short.
After arriving in Malawi, the pair stopped to rest at Kaphiri, a decision that would prove fateful. Sub Inspector Foster Benjamin, serving as Central West Region Police Public Relations Officer, detailed how investigators from Dowa police tracked the stolen vehicle to Nyemba Village under Traditional Authority Msakambewa, where Mbalangwe had apparently sought refuge. The successful recovery operation involved coordination between district police and the specialized Anti Motor Vehicle Theft Unit in Lilongwe, demonstrating the increasing sophistication of cross border and inter district law enforcement cooperation in Malawi.
