The National Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Coalition of Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) in Sokoto State have expressed optimism over the ongoing Sokoto-Badagry highway project, highlighting its potential to transform local communities and regional connectivity.

Speaking during a site inspection, media tour, and commissioning of emergency road repairs on Wednesday, NSE Sokoto chapter chairman Abubakar Ibrahim praised the steady progress and quality of the work, noting that it reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving lives in rural areas.

Dr Abdurrahman Umar, Secretary of the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations in Sokoto State, described the highway as a landmark achievement connecting seven states from North to South. He emphasized that the project, executed to international standards, could significantly boost socioeconomic activities nationwide.

Residents expressed excitement over the improved infrastructure, noting that it would ease transportation of agricultural produce, facilitate dry-season farming, and connect communities such as Katami, Alfada, Kabin Kaji, Gumbaye, Burgu, Gadanbe, Gidan Gara, and Silame.

Project Manager of HITECH Construction Company, Johon Fourie, highlighted the use of local manpower to ensure community engagement and local content. Federal Controller of Works in Sokoto, Kassimu Maigwandu, added that the 120-kilometre project features a six-lane concrete road, bridges, solar lighting, a railway, CCTV cameras, health posts, and strategic security stations.

Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Community Engagement in the Northwest, Alhaji Abdullahi Tanko-Yakasai, noted that the highway, initially conceived during late President Shehu Shagari’s regime, exemplifies the government’s dedication to legacy infrastructure and socio-economic development. He also commended Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, for executing multiple legacy highway projects across Nigeria.

The Sokoto-Badagry highway, inaugurated in phases, is poised to enhance regional trade, agriculture, tourism, and community livelihoods, underscoring the government’s focus on people-centered development.
