The Nigerian Senate has assured citizens that their concerns over the proposed creation of State Police will be carefully addressed as part of ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening national security.
This assurance was given by Barau Jibrin during a meeting in Abuja with members of a steering committee set up by the Nigeria Police Force. The committee is tasked with developing a framework for the elishment of State Police and is chaired by Olu Ogunsakin.
Jibrin commended the Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu for initiating the committee in line with the agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to improve security across the country. The committee was inaugurated on March 4 2026 and consists of eight members responsible for drafting a workable structure.
Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Senate President emphasized that the committee must prioritize accountability transparency and safeguards against abuse. He noted that many Nigerians had expressed fears during public hearings on constitutional amendments particularly regarding potential misuse of State Police by local authorities.
According to him the proposed system must include mechanisms that ensure public trust and create a secure environment for all citizens. He stressed the need for a strong public safety structure that balances local policing with national oversight.
A bill currently before the Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution seeks to legalize State and Community Police as part of broader reforms. The committee has already conducted public consultations across the six geopolitical zones to gather input from stakeholders.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that any decision reflects the will of the people while enhancing security nationwide.
