SDP Elects Prof Sadiq Gombe as National Chairman, Pledges “Rescue Mission” Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Social Democratic Party has elected Professor Sadiq Gombe as its new National Chairman during its 2026 national convention held in Bauchi on Saturday.

Gombe emerged alongside other members of the National Working Committee after the convention, where party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to repositioning the SDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his acceptance speech after being sworn in, Gombe said the party remains one of the most credible political platforms capable of leading Nigeria into a new era of governance.

He expressed gratitude to delegates for the confidence placed in him and pledged to provide transparent, patriotic, and disciplined leadership guided by the Constitution of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the party’s internal rules.

According to him, the SDP under his leadership will prioritise accountability and will not take Nigerians for granted, stressing that the country urgently needs integrity driven leadership.

Gombe added that the party is positioning itself as a strong alternative for Nigerians seeking ce, describing its mission as a “rescue effort” aimed at addressing the country’s socio economic and political challenges.

He also thanked party leaders and stakeholders for their contributions to the growth of the SDP and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to national development.

The convention chairman, Usman Bugaje, also addressed delegates and raised concerns about the state of governance in the country, citing insecurity, unemployment, rising fuel costs, and poverty as major national challenges.

Bugaje accused the ruling elishment of attempting to shrink democratic space and weaken opposition parties, alleging undue influence over key institutions such as the judiciary and electoral bos.

He urged party members to remain committed despite challenges, stating that their participation reflects a determination to improve the fortunes of Nigerians.

The convention, themed “Building a People’s Coalition to Secure Our Homeland and Defeat Poverty,” emphasised the party’s focus on presenting new leadership alternatives ahead of the 2027 elections.

The newly elected National Working Committee includes Prof Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman South, Olu Agunloye as National Secretary, Hajiya Mariam Maggie Batubo as National Treasurer, Joseph Achille Abu as National Organising Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba as National Publicity Secretary, and other key officials.

With the new leadership in place, the SDP says it is determined to strengthen its structure nationwide and position itself as a serious contender in the upcoming electoral cycle.
