Cristiano Ronaldo is on the verge of making football history after being named in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 41 year old captain could become the first male footballer ever to play in six different editions of the global tournament, further cementing his legendary status in world football.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez confirmed Ronaldo’s inclusion in the final squad as the Seleção prepares for another attempt to win the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history. Ronaldo remains one of the most influential figures in international football despite his age, continuing to perform at a high level for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward already holds the record for the most international appearances and goals in men’s football, with 226 caps and 143 goals for Portugal. Ronaldo is also among only six players to have featured in five FIFA World Cups, alongside longtime rival Lionel Messi of Argentina.
Martínez also paid an emotional tribute to late Portugal international Diogo Jota during the squad announcement. The coach described Jota as the “plus one forever” after the player tragically d in a car accident last year.
Portugal’s squad includes several top stars such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Rafael Leao and Joao Felix. The team has been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
Before the tournament begins, Portugal will play international friendlies against Chile and Nigeria as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
