Rivers Assembly Explains Grounds for Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has outlined the reasons behind the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, citing alleged violations of a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, disclosed this during plenary on Thursday while presenting a report detailing what lawmakers described as acts of misconduct by the governor. According to Jack, the impeachment move was necessitated by the administration’s alleged failure to uphold commitments reached during reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring political ility in the state.

He accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of persistently disregarding resolutions agreed upon during peace meetings facilitated by President Tinubu. Jack stated that the agreements, which were meant to de-escalate tensions and promote cooperation among political stakeholders, were breached on multiple occasions.

“The governor and his deputy have continued to act in a manner that undermines democratic principles and accountability,” Jack told the Assembly. He further alleged that the state government had been run without sufficient commitment to transparency, due process, and good governance.

According to the Majority Leader, the peace accords violated by the governor’s administration included resolutions reached during reconciliation meetings held in December 2023 as well as another round of talks in 2025. Lawmakers argued that despite repeated interventions and goodwill efforts, the governor and his deputy failed to honour the agreed terms.

Jack maintained that the impeachment proceedings were not driven by personal or political vendetta but by the need to protect democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law in Rivers State. He stressed that the continued breach of the peace agreements left the Assembly with no option but to initiate constitutional measures.

The impeachment process, he said, is aimed at restoring order, accountability, and respect for agreements reached in the interest of lasting peace and ility in the state.
