President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, pending confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the President’s aide, Olusegun Dada, in a statement posted on social media platform X. According to the statement, the nomination has already been formally transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.
The development follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down from office to pursue an elective political position.
In a separate statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tegbe was described as a seasoned fiscal and economic reform expert with more than 35 years of experience across both public and private sectors.
Tegbe previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led major initiatives focused on fiscal policy reform, governance improvement, institutional transformation, and economic strategy. Over the years, he has also advised several government institutions and private organisations on regulatory frameworks, investment structuring, and strategic reforms.
At present, he serves as Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria China Strategic Partnership, a role in which he coordinates bilateral engagements aimed at strengthening economic and social development cooperation between Nigeria and China. The initiative also supports Nigeria’s participation in broader international frameworks for development collaboration.
According to the presidency, Tegbe brings relevant experience in the power sector, having previously engaged in regulatory and institutional reform efforts involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.
If confirmed by the Senate, he is expected to oversee reforms and policy direction in the power sector, which remains a critical component of the administration’s economic development agenda.
